The big story with the Fit — and one that sets it apart from other cars in this category — is its seating. A single lever on the side of the rear seats allows complete repositioning of the seats. The seat bottoms can be flipped up to allow even more tall objects to be carried within the car. They can also be folded flat for long objects and the front passenger seat can be folded down, allowing one to sit in the back in sort of a lounge chair mode. The rear lift gate is wonderfully balanced and the rear cargo space is wide enough to allow even the longest golf bags.

Road noise is noticeable in the 2009 Toyota Venza, but overall noise levels at highway speeds are acceptably low. Thanks to its higher roof line and greater width, the Venza has more passenger space than the already accommodating Camry, especially in back. Rear headroom and legroom are up by 1.5 inches and 0.8 inch, respectively, and rear hiproom grows by a significant 2.4 inches. The result is a cabin that's comfortable for passengers of all sizes, though we'd like to see rear-seat climate controls. We're also a bit surprised that Toyota didn't include a third-row seating option for larger families.

2009 Kia Borrego V8 4WD: Comfort

Seating in the Borrego is comfortable and offers a relatively wide range of adjustability. A high seating position, combined with an intelligent overall design, ensures very good visibility. (A huge blind spot caused by the C-pillar on the Ford Explorer, for example, has made us scream in anger all too often.) The second and third rows offer respectable space and comfort, and average-size adults can fit in all seats. But as is typical of most folding third rows in the segment, the Borrego's rearmost passenger space is a little tight.

What you might not expect is the cumbersome operation of the 2.5XT Limited's integrated navigation system and stereo. The navigation system itself actually works well enough, but with a mélange of two knobs, 10 identical-looking buttons and various touchscreen inputs, there's nothing simple about getting the Forester to play your favorite tunes. What's more, when you want to tailor the sound beyond presets like "Rock" and "Jazz Club," you'll have to go through a digital version of a vintage 1985 graphic equalizer — no simple bass and treble adjustments here. Adding insult to inconvenience, the sound quality is mediocre at best, regardless of how much you tinker with the settings.
